ECTS 2003: Wrap-Up Report

It's been a busy three days, full of ups and downs, boost pads, red shells and slow motion but we survived it with few scars and small bruises. Now, what else is there to do other than share our heart felt opinions of the whole event with all of you? So here goes...

This is where it all took place - Earls Court, London.

Nintendo Booth:

Matt: You know I liked this area, the kart layout and just everything there was a far cry from the formalities of everything indoors. And playing the newest releases is always a good thing, Nintendo outdid themselves in my opinion and I'm looking forwards to seeing what they do next year.

Tim: Who said parking a truck outside the ECTS would be a stupid thing to do? Nintendo certainly has proven it can steal the show with a truck, 40 pods, and some karts. The stand was excellent. It was great playing all the upcoming games, and I can't wait to see what they will do next year..

Joby: Nintendo being stubborn and clever decided to showcase the best games at Earls Court outside in their own booth, infact, the best games were all their own games. Which is lovely for us GameCube owners now isn't it. Every GameCube game shown by Nintendo will be acquired by me on its PAL release day. They are all superb.

Authentic Mario Karts?

N-Gage:

Matt: The jester to the GBA which is king.

Tim: I guess the graphics of the N-Gage do look good. Though the buttons and the combination in the phone just doesn't work. And I am not even mentioning the price. No, I don't think Nintendo has to be afraid of Nokia.

Joby: The games take ages to load, to use the phone you have to hold it sideways, it'll cost a couple of hundred, its really really badly designed with about six million buttons. Argh. Sorry Nokia, it sucks.

"So how does this work?"

Viewtiful Joe

Matt: Another original game with huge amounts of gameplay as well as the perfect word to describe it. This game is viewtiful and I beg all of you to play it atleast once.

Tim: This game is one of the best I have played this year. It isn't only graphicly impressive, but it is also an amazingly fun game to play. Be sure not miss out on the exclusive Q&A session we attended with the producer of Viewtiful Joe. Hensin A Go Go Baby!

Joby:Not only is this game addictive. Its bloody hard. Don't expect to run through it in fast mode and complete it with an easy boss at the end of each level. Instead be prepared to be amazed with slo-mo and zoom in as well as the ultimate 'cheese' storyline. This game is not for the normal gamer, which is why its exclusive to us hardcore GameCube owners.

This is where they showed us Viewtiful Joe. Scary ey?

F-Zero GX:

Matt: Sega surprised me with this one, in many ways it feels like the N64 version but now it looks astounding, I played a single race and then a two player race and felt torn between deep concentration and just sitting back and smiling. Another game I'll be buying.

Tim: 'Buy, buy, buy' is all I could think of while playing this game. This is one hot title every GameCube owner should have in its game library. It is fast, hot, fun, good looking, and more. F-Zero is to good to be true.

Joby:Picking it up to play felt like it was exactly what I was dreaming it all to be, but better. Its so beautifully fast it hurts. The music is so fast it burns, and the GameCube just makes it all too true - no Nintendo machine can be without F Zero. Well done Sega.

Mario Kart:

Matt: Beautiful, just beautiful. *wipes tear from eye*

Tim: What a crappy game this is. Hey now! Of course that is just a joke. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was my favourite game of the show. Definitely.

Joby:*helps Matt wipe the tears*. Mario Kart has always been unpredictable. I don't think Tim will ever forgive me for knocking him off the bridge. I was in first position for two laps, then I finished last. Mario Kart is still as random as ever, but still as stupidly good as ever. Well done Nintendo.

The Nintendo truck from the inside.

1080:

Matt: I was a big fan of the origional so it's no big surprise when I say that I'm looking forwards to this one, from the little I played the game still seems very technical and difficult which I like. No doubt I'll be emptying my pockets for this one...

Tim: 1080 and SSX3 are going to have one exciting neck-on-neck race when released. Both titles look amazingly good, and both play extremely well. Which one shall win the race? I put my money on 1080.

Joby:I'll get this game because its more extreme than most other games on the Cube, its very challenging and looks to be worth the several years its been in development. Not the best game at the show by far, but for any 1080 fan, its going to be a cracker.

Rogue Ops:

Matt: This one actually made me wince. Kemco look like they might release a great game and capcom rarely seem to back a bad title. Chances are I'll be broke when this is released but I'll buy it anyway.

Tim: Kemco and Capcom are set to suprise the gaming industry with their upcoming title Rogue Ops. We saw the game in action, and we recommend this one to everybody out there. Rogue Ops combines the best features of the best games. Check out our ECTS footage of this game if you are not convined yet.

Joby: Not as excited about this as Matt, I was too busy trying to film then concentrate on the actual presentation. It does look rather good though. A Splinter Cell beater, but thats not saying much in my opinion. I didn't like that game.

That is where we reported from. The ECTS press office...

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

Matt: I love you? I loved the teamwork feel and how all of us worked together to get through an area.

Tim: The multiplayer mode is a lot of fun to play. You are forced to work as a team, else you are destined to fail the game. The question is...who holds the bucket?

Joby:I have prayed for a sequel to Secret of Mana for years now. Now it looks like I can finally play an RPG with a mate, looks like its me and you Matt all the way! This game is going to be awesome because its simplistically beautiful as well as deep. Perfect.

Atari Booth:

Matt: I swear Enter the Matrix was already released and I swear I hated it.... Bring on Ikaruga 2, until then I am disatisfied.

Tim: We got to see some Driver 3 and Terminator 3 footage. But that was about it on the GameCube side of things.

Joby:Well, not much to comment on with this booth. Anger was felt between us when Matt told them Enter The Matrix 'sucked'. Although we asked about Ikuraga 2 and they inform us it could be in the works, but a release is far far off. I tried to film some Driver 3 footage and felt my presence unwanted. Atari aren't as cool as people would have them believe. Bah.

The Atari booth!

THQ Booth:

Matt: zzzZZZzzzZZZzzz

Tim: I don't fully agree with Matt here. I enjoyed playing Sphinx. Finding Nemo and Tak The Power of JuJu weren't that interesting though. But I will surely give them a fair try when they are released.

Joby: They seemed to concentrate more on the fact they were a successful company than their games at the trade show. It seemed to be 'dress up nice and impress', instead of 'put on a good show to impress'. I was however impressed with WrestleMania IXX's visuals. Very nice!

THQ is in tha house!

Mmmmm Video Games!

UbiSoft:

Matt: Prince of Persia looks great, as does XIII. Ubisoft won best stand on the show deservedly.

Tim: I enjoyed playing XII, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good & Evil a lot. Well done Ubi Soft! And congratulations with all the ECTS awards you won. *pssst* send me one will you?

Joby: By far the greatest booth within ECTS. The Booth Babe was extremely helpful and helped me find my way around.... my way around a Beyond Good and Evil (and yeah I felt like being beyond good and evil..heh). Well done UbiSoft, Prince of Persia and XIII look excellent as well. You deserved all the awards.
