eShop to undergo lengthy maintenence amid apologies for downtime

Nintendo has confirmed it will be taking all eShop services offline tonight as it works to fix the problems that plagued its network over the past two days.

Both 3DS and Wii U users were greeted with errors for the vast majority of both Christmas Day and Boxing Day when they tried to connect to Nintendo's online store.

While services appear to be largely up and running again this morning, Nintendo has announced that it will be taking the eShop offline tonight, from 9pm GMT to 9am GMT as it works to shore up its servers. The company apologised for the problems and acknowledged that providing a fix was taking "longer than expected".

Nintendo has not confirmed whether or not sales which were due to be active over the downtime will be extended.

Two casualties from the problems are Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter. Those software applications were due to be released today but have now been put on hold for the time being.
