Event Report: Get Up and Dance Launch

What happens when you get a bunch of journalists together to play a dancing game? Perhaps not much initially, particularly if thrust onto a large stage, but add in a healthy dose of alcohol and a positive atmosphere and nearly everyone will be game.

The above describes the launch of Get Up and Dance, or at least I assume it does. I wasn't there at the start but inevitably there will always be a divide between those who are happy to dance in front of everyone and those who wont and it's how you encourage those people that makes all the difference. This is undoubtedly a challenge faced by dancing enthusiasts in their own homes when they pop games such as Get Up and Dance into their consoles in front of a rather reluctant audience.

Thankfully people were quite relaxed and a lot of people seemed to be enjoying Get Up and Dance. You may recall we did a hands-on with the game in August and described it as a "great game for anyone who enjoys dancing" and great for social environments, which this was certainly the case for the game's launch. Seemingly everyone tried the game out, even those most reluctant to get up and dance, and enjoyed themselves. We're sure some unfortunate photographs and videos were taken but that's part of the joy of this kind of game (but while we're on the point if anyone finds that video of me playing this, or even Just Dance from some time ago, please feel free to destroy it).

The event also featured the attendance of Amy Childs from TV's The Only Way Is Essex. While I personally am indifferent to the programme there were clearly a lot of fans there and it must be handed to Amy Childs as she stuck around for a while and chatted to people in spite of being quite ill. The whole night wasn't centered around her appearance though, the focus was quite firmly on the dancing.

With the inclusion of free glow sticks and alcohol the launch was certainly enjoyable. I'm proud to say I beat Alex from Nintendo Universe at La Roux's 'Bulletproof' (and we'll ignore the fact he beat me at another song) and I think many friends will find themselves in similar situations with Get Up and Dance - it's a fun game to play in the company of friends and something to brag about if you win.

Get Up and Dance is available this Friday at a budget price so if you, or someone you know, likes to dance and enjoys a mixture of songs from the past and present be sure to check it out. It faces stiff competition in terms of the popular Just Dance but Get Up and Dance can sit alongside it while offering its own unique take on the genre. For more information about how the game itself plays be sure to check out our hands-on.
