Every Wii U/3DS game will be available digitally, accounts confirmed

There will be a day where every 3DS and Wii U game will be available in both packaged retail and digital forms, Nintendo has confirmed.

In an interview with Wired, Nintendo of America's VP of corporate affairs, Cindy Gordon, was asked about the upcoming Miiverse service and its ability to highlight games that are currently popular among users. Specifically, Gordon was asked whether users would be able to download games straight away upon seeing them on the Miiverse.

"Yes. What we said is that every game for the Wii U, and this is true for the Nintendo 3DS too, will be available in both packaged as well as digital. It's really about choice. What I remember as a parent, I prefer the download because I won't lose the disk. But some people thrive on [having the physical game], to each his own."

What is clear is that Nintendo is planning a future where every game will be available to in digital form, but it isn't clear how soon this will be implemented. While the Miiverse service will be available on Wii U on day one (coming to 3DS soon after), it isn't explicitly confirmed that every Wii U game will be offered digitally straight away.

At E3, one Nintendo rep said that "select" Wii U games would be available digitially at launch, suggesting that the timing of a full move towards digital is still up in the air.

Gordon also confirmed that Wii U brings with it a traditional account system, allowing users to play their games on their friends systems by accessing their personal account on there.

Nintendo laid out its digital distribution plan earlier this year, which drew praise from developers, publishers and industry insiders. It includes allowing people to buy digital forms of games from traditional retailers, whereby one would purchase a 'download code' and then redeeming it on their console in order to download the game.
