Hardware Review
The Action Reply is a cheat/save management device designed for use with both the GBA and the Nintendo DS. It has all the same features that you would find in a standard GBA AR all the same codes of the previous version can be used without a problem.
The difference with the AR Max is the inclusion of new, DS exclusive capabilities. Though Datel neglected to include a full cheat system for the DS, like with the GBA, we are treated to a 'save manager' system that allows you to back up, replace and copy save files from your DS games.
The GBA side of the Max works as efficiently as ever before. You are able to download codes/cheats from the AR website, and enter them onto your device via USB. When you start up your Max (with a GBA game inserted), you're able to select the codes you want to use via a simple menu. There are literally thousands of codes for almost the entire GBA library, so you should have no problem picking and choosing suitable cheats for your game.
With the Nintendo DS features of the machine, you can enter previously saved files (also downloaded at the website) onto the Action Replay via USB, as well as backing up your own save files. This means you could download a save file for Super Mario 64 DS with all 150 stars unlocked for you, or all the souvenirs in WarioWare Touched can be accessed with a few clicks. While tinkering with your various save files, however, Cube-Europe recommend that you take the time to back up your own saves too should you accidentally erase them.
The device itself is rather bulky, and also a little flimsy compared to standard GBA carts, but thankfully it's solid enough to withstand any accidents which might occur.
The AR Max is packaged in a very cool little tin containing (as well as the device itself) AR Max software, a brief instruction manual, and a USB cable. The software is both easy to install and easy to use, allowing you to transfer codes to and from the system with ease.
All in all, it's a rather nifty little gadget. While we were a little disappointed at the lack of 'proper' DS cheats, it was made up for with the downloadable game saves via the websites. And with a wealth of GBA cheats available at the click of a mouse, you can't go wrong with this little gadget.
