IGNcube: Why do you think Capcom Japan has aligned itself so strongly with Nintendo and GameCube?
Capcom: The first thing that you must understand is that Capcom has a multi-platform philosophy. In other words, we believe that we must diversify our offerings, as there are three strong console players in the market. Mr. Shinji Mikami (best known for creating the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis series) -- his team is also creating the GameCube products that were announced on November 14 in Japan -- has been quoted as saying that he likes the GameCube because it is the only system that was designed specifically and exclusively for games. He has also developed a strong relationship with Nintendo. Mr. Mikami has embraced this platform and is focusing his development efforts on it.
IGNcube: How do you see GameCube performing over the holiday season?
Capcom: The GameCube should have a strong Christmas as there are some really great titles including Metroid Prime, our own Resident Evil Zero and Zelda on the way in the near future. The price point is the lowest, which we know can motivate a consumer, especially in this economy. One thing is for sure, at this time in this industry, there are no guarantees.
IGNcube: What has Nintendo done right and wrong with the console so far?
Capcom: Nintendo has made some very positive decisions to attract the older gamer. This was an important focus that they continue to address by offering titles that older gamers enjoy. The one place they need to work on is the sports genre. Sony has always had a very strong offering with sports games and Nintendo could use more from this genre. They have done a very good job of attracting high profile Japanese third parties and they need to continue to do so. As always, Nintendo has delivered very high quality first party titles like Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine and of course, Zelda in March. They need to continue to be aggressive as the industry is facing one of the most competitive times in its history. Finally, working with Nintendo has been a very positive experience as they have some of the most talented people in the industry.
IGNcube: In your opinion, does the GameCube need an image makeover?
Capcom: The GameCube, because of its design and the fact that it is made by Nintendo definitely is facing the obstacle of getting older gamers truly interested. Nintendo appears to be moving in the right direction as it has garnered more action and adult oriented games like Resident Evil, which we know is a mainstay for older gamers. As opposed to an image makeover, they need to continue to attract new gamers by doing two things: Keep the younger consumer base happy by delivering quality titles and continue to aggressively pursue titles that will appeal to the mature gamer.
