In this hands-on we'll only give you our first impressions of the game. We won't give you any details on the story etc.
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was linked to the GBA version. The Nintendo guy demonstrated us first how the GBA link worked. You could pick up some young Chao's (characters) in the GBA game, and then drop them in the GameCube game. There you could bring them to school and teach them certain things. It was cool to see how the GBA link worked, but picking up those babies and bringing them to school was pretty boring.
Fortunately, the Sonic game without the GBA link was much cooler. We played the first level, where you had to run with Sonic through the streets of a town that looked very mcuh like San Fransisco. The basic idea behing Sonic is of course just running, running and even more running, and in the meanwhile collect golden coins and kick any obstacle. So there I was, running at enormous speed, and kicking all the cars so they'd fly through the air.
All of a sudden, a big truck started chasing me for unknown reasons, so I had to run even faster! After a while I outran him,
but now I had to jump across moving piles. That wasn't too difficult, and after a bit more of racing I'd finished the first level. It wasn't really big, but if you realize that this game has 150 different missions, you can understand that it will take you a while to complete the entire game.
The graphics of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle were good, the 3D environment was pretty detailed. It was cool to see that the game never lost any of its looks even if you were running as fast as possible. I read at a couple of other sites that they had some prblems with the camera every now and then, but I think I didn't play the game long enough to really notice this.
The controls were also good, I nevr had any problems with them. Just press the stick in te direction you want to head to, and press A if there'a car or anything else in your way. You can also use A to jump.
Overal conclusion: very good game. I will definitely get this one. Even though it doesn't look as mature as games like Eternal Darkness or Resident Evil, I'm sure it will appeal to gamers of most ages.
