Monster Hunter Tri servers set to shutdown

Just yesterday we announced the EU release date for Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate and now we get news that the Wii version, Tri, will sadly close its doors in April.

Yes, after three years of monster slaying and changing the views of many as far as online Wii gaming is concerned, Capcom's Yuri Lindbergh (Dubindoh) announced that Monster Hunter Tri is "transitioning off" before promoting the launch dates for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

Whilst this news may come as a blow to hardcore Wii gamers, it certainly makes sense to Capcom. The online numbers will have been consistently dropping, the Wii servers could be being moved to provide more bandwidth for the Wii U title and it will give current Tri owners even more reason to move on to Ultimate.

Tri made a big splash when it first appeared on the Wii, boasting the kind of online functionality not regularly seen on Nintendo platforms. Tri allowed you to hunt with three others, communicating via voice or text chat, with the use of headsets.

Yesterday it was confirmed that Ultimate will also support voice chat thanks to the built in mic in the Wii U GamePad. Headset support has yet to be confirmed.
