Okay, not in those exact words. The gaming god praises America for its admirable ability to create original games.
Following the announcement of America's WiiWare launch line-up, Wired have conducted an interview with the undisputed father of modern day gaming, Shigeru Miyamoto, regarding WiiWare and the current state of the games industry.
"In Japan, the technology required to create videogames tends to be concentrated in the bigger corporations," says Mr. Miyamoto. "Here in the United States, you have these independent developers who have managed to get the skills and the training and the development, and also have managed to get access to the technology and the hardware needed to develop it. They're able to let their own personality and their own kind of unique interests really flourish in the games that they're creating."
Some brilliant games are coming out of America for WiiWare. The amazingly fun and physics-based World of Goo created by 2D Boy and Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People, the episodic title based on the popular internet cartoon Home Runner are just a couple of examples. But in this situation, we feel inclined to disagree with the Shigsynator.
Looking at the WiiWare release schedule, there are a lot more titles coming out of the continent which this very website is dedicated to (that would be Europe, if you're feeling a bit slow). Plattchen - twist 'n' paint, Toki Tori, Eternity's Child, Lost Winds and Last Flight are but a few examples of fantastic European talent which Miyamoto seems to be overlooking. But we digress.
Further into Wired's article, Bryan Jury of Epicenter Studios (developers of Critter Round-Up) expresses some concerns about WiiWare. He believes that the Wii's limited system memory could well be a problem for Wii owners; he worries that consumers won't want to shuffle around their games and have to constantly delete things. He also believes that WiiWare bears a risk of becoming oversaturated with games, causing some great titles to be overlooked. We have to admit, it is beginning to look that way with Gameloft's collection of mobile phone ports...
Interestingly, Miyamoto adds a comment to the end of the article that he'd like to develop a one-man WiiWare project, just like the good old days of the original Donkey Kong.
WiiWare will launch in the US on the 12th of May, and will follow suit in Europe shortly after on the 20th.
