Miyamoto is working on 3D and 2D iterations of the Mario series for the 3DS to ensure all gamers are pleased.

While most fans of the Mario series embraced the change to 3D gameplay, which began with Super Mario 64, the total sales did drop from earlier titles. While this may have been due to bigger overall changes (such as increased competition) Nintendo have released both 2D and 3D titles in the Mario series for the DS and Wii.

This tradition is set to continue on the 3DS as Miyamoto has confirmed he is working on both a 3D Mario title and a 2D one. Both of these titles are set to utilise the 3D effects that the handheld offers but the gameplay style will be different - one will be an open world to explore while the other will be side-scrolling.

While game details are still not known it is likely that at least one of these titles will be available at launch considering the popularity of the franchise. Let us know which approach you prefer in the comments below.
