News: 3DS Barely Holds Onto Japanese Top Spot

A month since its release in Japan the Nintendo 3DS narrowly avoids being outsold by the PSP.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 50,710 units in the last week, down from 61,394 units the week before and 96,463 the week prior to that. While a slowdown is inevitable its figures place it just above the PSP, which sold 50,479 in the hardware charts. The PSP was undoubtedly helped by the release of Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection, although the units it sold are not too dissimilar from what it typically sells in Japan.

All consoles sales, other than the 3DS, were up this week. 11,808 Wii units were sold, while 9,760 DSi LL (XL) units and 8,604 DSi units were sold. The DS Lite still has a bit of life in Japan, with sales last week reaching 730 units according to Andriasand.

The Media Create software charts see Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection coming straight in at number one, with almost three times the sales of its closest rival. Gundam The 3D Battle sold 23,500 units to become the first 3DS title to enter in the top ten since launch, coming in as 3rd. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask still remains the most popular 3DS launch title, coming in at number six in this week's charts.
