News: 3DS Sales Up 260% in America

The Nintendo 3DS is now in 260% more American hands following the price cut.

Nintendo's gamble on cutting the 3DS' price to increase sales seems to have paid off. Following strong sales in Japan the console has also been doing well in North America. Nintendo of America report that sales of the console have gone up by 260% in the few weeks following the console's price reduction.

In a press release Nintendo cites NPD data stating that 185,000 units have been sold since the price reduction, an increase of 260% on the comparable 19-day time period in July. Speaking of the success Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, said the following:

"Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS, With Star Fox 64 3D and the new Flame Red color launching tomorrow, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 arriving later this year, Nintendo 3DS will offer consumers cutting-edge entertainment and tremendous value this holiday season."

The Nintendo Wii also did well during August in North America, selling 190,000 units during the month, while the DS family sold 165,000 units. The press release also proudly states that 50 million units of software have been sold for Nintendo consoles in North America in 2011 so far.
