News: Acclaim Files for Bankruptcy

A few days ago we reported that Acclaim had closed its offices, but today we have learned that the company has filed for bankruptcy and fired all of its employees.
Acclaim always had an uneven track record, perhaps with more misses than hits, but it appeared that they had righted their ship during the N64 era when they were part of Nintendo's "Dream Team" of publishers. Among its success stories for that system were Turok, Extreme G, the All Star Baseball series and WWF Warzone.
The Glen Cove, NY based company never gained a foothold in the current generation. It's final Turok title was a failure both critically and financially, interest waned in many of its properties and they even recently lost their license from Major League Baseball.
Acclaim's US employees were not paid for the final two weeks of the month while the company's UK staff (which is paid monthly) did not receive any pay in August. Acclaim is paying employee benefits through the end of August.
Whether or not you were a fan of Acclaim or its games, it's sad to see a company that has been around since the 8-bit era go. We wish the company's employees the best of luck in the future.
