News: Activision To Cancel Sony Support?

The biggest third-party publisher in the world is considering dropping all support for Sony consoles...

In a stark warning to Sony, Activision chairman Bobby Kotick has stunned many by suggesting the company may withdraw for the PS3 and PSP in the future. Since merging with Vivendi, Activision has overtaken Electronic Arts to become the world's biggest independent computer games company with a market value of $16 billion.

His reasoning for this? Kotick told The Times:

"I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation."

Kotick claims Activision paid $500 million to Sony in royalties and other goods last year, despite Sony's games division eventually finishing with a loss of $597 million. Kotick says Sony must cut the price of the PS3 to turn sales around:

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console and the PSP [portable] too."

While his Kotick's postulating is far from actual business policy, the fact that such a pivotal third-party developer is even mentioning such ideas out in the open is pretty unprecedented. Should Activision keep supporting Sony? Let us know your thoughts below...
