News: Aussie Game Industry Booming

Australian games industry is now worth an estimated AU$ 110m

Australia seems to be an area that is overlooked by many, including Nintendo. However, is all that set to change?

The industry down under is growing at a rapid pace, and employment has risen over 60% over the past three years. The industry itself is now worth about AU$ 110 million.

The Australian Electronic Game Profile Report reveals that the industry for the PAL region is now worth AU $110 million (EUR 65.5m) each year, and employs over 1600 people, 1350 of which are permanent staff.

Eighty per cent of the regions' total revenue is generated by the eight largest games companies, with each reporting annual revenues of more than AU $4 million (EUR 2.3m), with the top four companies reaching yearly revenues of over AU $10 million (EUR 5.9m).

The report also found that 85 per cent of Australian games companies develop their own IP, with 80 per cent self-funding, 30 per cent relying on external funding and 20 per cent collaborating on projects. However, the report also found that only 20 per cent of projects that began by developing original IP made it to market.

There is a very, very bright future ahead for Australia in the games industry, and we only hope that it just keeps growing and growing.
