News: BAFTA Game Nominees Announced

Dr. Kawashima dominates Nintendo's nominees.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts today announced the nominations for The British Academy Video Games Awards, with the intent of showcasing "artistic, creative and technical innovation". With that in mind, it is the DS' powerhouse Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? and the indefinable genius that is Electroplankton that scooped most of Nintendo's nominations. Dr. Kawashima's piece of addictive mental boosting was nominated in the Innovation, Casual and Social and Best Game categories; the DS' oceanic sound simulator joins Brain Training in Innovation and Casual and Social, with an appearance in, naturally, Audio.

Additionally, Trauma Center: Under The Knife was nominated for a Simulation award, Metroid Prime: Hunters for Action and Adventure, Animal Crossing: Wild World for Multiplayer and Age of Empires: The Age Of Kings for Strategy, despite it not having been released here yet. Most bizarrely, and disappointingly, Super Mario Bros. DS only got a single nomination - in the Children's category. Excuse us, BAFTA?

The awards will take place on October 5th, curiously hosted by TV presenter Veron Kay. Will Brain Training replicate its success at the Edge Awards a few weeks ago? Its competition for Best Game includes Black (PS2), Guitar Hero (PS2), Hitman: Blood Money, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Check back then to find out how it fared.
