News: Bionic Commando Blocked For VC

We've got bad news for anyone waiting for the classic NES Nazi-filled title Bionic Commando...

Originally released back in 1988, Capcom's Bionic Commando was a platformer for the NES where gamers played as Nathan "Radd" Spencer, a commando equipped with a bionic arm which was used to grapple your way through levels.

In Japan, the title featured Nazi characters, including Hitler, and swastika-covered banners - all of which were successfully removed or altered for the title's Western release.

Regardless, it appears Capcom have been blocked from re-releasing the game on the Virtual Console, as the game's producer Ben Judd has told 1UP:

1UP: What about the original Bionic Commando for Virtual Console?

BJ: We couldn't get it approved for the Virtual Console.

1UP: Is that because of the whole Nazi thing?

BJ: I can't say why. I can just say that we tried to get it to work. We're huge fans of the game. When you think about it, it totally makes sense as a strategy to have the original game out there in some format that people can play and see what was so great about it. But we were told no.

It's a shame really, since we're not sure what really would have been inappropriate if the Nazi-free Western version had been re-released.
