News: Breaking - Unity Movies!

Inside we have the first ever movies showcasing Lionhead's Unity for the Nintendo GameCube! *Drool*

A few months back, Jeff Minter (a well known figure in the industry, largely because of excellent work on the Atari Jaguar update to the classic game 'Tempest') and his company, Llamasoft games, secured funding and developmental support from Peter Molyneaux (yet another industry legend, Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Black and White) and his company, Lionhead Studios. The support is for a GameCube exclusive title currently known as 'Unity'.

Unity is a journey through a succession of beautiful abstract 3D spaces, with gameplay varying in tempo, from fast paced shooting to a more gentle progression. Audio effects will be closely linked with the games pace and tempo and will be an integral part of the playing experience.

Today we got sent the footage, which appears to be taken from Unity. It was supposedly filmed at a Unity demonstation show. They aren't of the highest quality, but they do give you a good feel of the game.
We do not know who made the movies, but we'd like to thank that person either way! We hope you enjoy these movies as much as we did. Unity is shaping up to be one wicked 'underground' game.

UPDATE 5-8-2003 12:55

We just got a message from Chris, the man behind the camera. He explains all about the movies in his message below.

Hello, those videos were taken by me at a small private showing of the *early* stages of Unity at the weekend. They weren't really intended for mass consumption and they're not particularly authoritive but I'm glad that most of you seem to like what you see.

Please remember that these videos were just snapped away at the beginning of the Unity demo - I don't know if you've picked up on the ur-space demo (it's the one with the little triangles on the screen if you have) but that's the only one that really features *any* indication of the gameplay. It is, quite simply, far too early to tell how things will pan out on that side - the current incarnation of Unity is a tech demo and a fully working VLM.

I've spent some time on the VLM, and I have also had a quick blast on the proto shooter aspects and, even at this early stage, it rocks. Jeff is only now starting to look at the game aspects of this, but I trust his judgement when it comes to that side, and so should you ;)

Jeff has spent something like eight months getting Unity to the stage it's at now, and there is about a year of development left. For one man to achieve *this* much in eight months working on new hardware is awesome. I can only imagine what he can do in the next twelve.

Cheers
Chris

We would like to thank Chris for sending us this message. We will bring you more news on Unity as it breaks!
