News: British Games Industry At An All Time High

According to ELSPA, 2006 was a very good year for the industry.

ELSPA are reporting that 2006 was a 'record breaking' year for the British Video Games Industry. A seven percent increase in the number of games being sold saw the overall figure rise to 65.1 million units.

The Nintendo DS enjoyed a successful year, and 'just pipped' Sony's PSP in terms of sales.

However, it was the Playstation 2 which performed well over the course of 2006. That was the highest selling console of 2006, followed by Microsoft's XBOX 360 and XBOX units respectively, and then Nintendo with their newly released Wii and aging Gamecube systems.

All format sales rose by one percent from last years sales, and the overall figure was a reported GBP 1.36 billion.

As far as game sales go, EA enjoyed another successful year, with four of their titles entering the top 10 best selling games of the year. FIFA 2007 was at the helm, with Need for Speed: Carbon at number three, The Sims 2: Pets at number six and The Sims 2 at 9. Konami also endured a successful year with their latest edition in the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise entering number two.

As far as the rest of the chart goes,Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is in fourth followed by Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy at five.

Movie tie-in Cars is in seventh place, while Lara makes a comeback with Tomb Raider: Legend in eighth. Rounding out the chart at number ten is WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007.
