News: Capcom To Cut Back Wii Support
Posted 07 Jan 2010 at 10:17 by Tom Phillips
Capcom join Sega in stating that the Wii has simply become unprofitable as a platform for mature titles. Details inside...
Citing poor sales of their latest Wii-exclusive entry in the Resident Evil series, the on-rails shooter, Darkside Chronicles, the Director General of Capcom's French division, Antoine Seux, has stated that the Wii's userbase has become a "disappointment" for launching mature titles. Seux claimed:
"One feels that there is a problem very clear on this style of game on the Wii, where gamers have obviously moved on. Resident Evil 4 on Wii worked well, but [it was released] when the market had nothing! he customer of [the Wii] has turned into something [of a] much broader audience. It is a disappointment."
Could we be seeing the final nail in the coffin for the otherwise long, long, long, long-rumoured/desired Resident Evil 5 Wii version? Perhaps so, since Darkside Chronicles only managed 16,000 units over three weeks on sale in France. Compare this to 140,000 copies of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition at its release.
Seux concludes:
"The Wii is still an important part of sales, but growth is on both [Sony and Microsoft's] platforms. The Wii console is very much a family commitment... for us, Capcom, the future is the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360."
Capcom's statement follows similar comments from Sega America's Constantine Hantzopoulos last week, who stated that Sega would no longer be developing further hardcore titles following poor sales of MadWorld and House of the Dead: OVERKILL.
Do you think the Wii's future as a platform for 'hardcore' games is over? How could Nintendo, yet again, try and claim back this lost audience? Leave your thoughts below...
Update: Capcom Europe sent out a mail to soothe things a little bit, even if they don't go into much detail. Here it is:
"Further to comments made in a recent article on French website Gamekult, Capcom would like to confirm its commitment as a multi-platform developer and publisher of interactive software.
Kind regards
Capcom's European PR Team"
Does this calm you a bit dear reader?
