News: Capcom To Increase Franchise Output

The Japanese publisher is aiming to increase the number of major titles released in a bid to counter falling sales...

After lower-than-expected earnings in the last fiscal year, it looks like Capcom are to go down the 'more is better' approach to software releases.

Andriasang reports that executives in Japan have decided to release more major titles from the company's roster of popular franchises per year; titles such as Resident Evil. According to the report, Capcom is aiming to increase the number of such big releases from two to three or four per year.

To achieve this goal, Capcom is to rely more on external resources for their main franchises, in other words outsourcing some developments to western studios. Capcom believes this tactic will slash the development time for big-budget games from four years to under three.

The news will likely effect mainly HD developments, but there's also a chance it could fast-track Monster Hunter 4 on Wii. One can hope, anyway.

Is this strategy healthy for quality, or is it franchise milkage? Let us know your thoughts below...
