News: de Blob 2 Information

Nick Hagger, Creative Director of de Blob 2, reveals a whole host of information about the sequel.

With de Blob 2 only a few months away more information is leaking about the title. Nick Hagger, the Creative Director of the game, recently spoke to IGN and revealed all kinds of information.

He was frank in his agreement with others that while fun de Blob plateaued after the first few levels and become a bit too familiar. To address this the narrative structure has been tightened and players progress through the levels by completing story missions and once they complete all of them in the level they can either move on or stick around.

Blob can now be upgraded, for example in his speed or how much paint he can carry, which occurs throughout the game to build towards the final boss. Blue Tongue hope that this will help in creating a continuously engaging experience in de Blob 2. Additionally Blob now has the ability to pick up armour, although that doesn't mean the game will be easy.

"If you get hit by an enemy without a shield, that'll take off chunks of your paint points. Imagine paint points are your hit points, so it's like a baton Inky hits you for five damage, a Spiky with his rocket will hit you for fifty. It's actually easy to die in this game, and lives actually have a meaning and they're quite an important resource in the later game."

The Rainbow power-up is still present but in addition to this a few extra power-ups have been added to help with the narrative. The Haz-Mat power-up allows you to roll over hazards such as the hot plates while the Wrecking Ball power-up turns Blob into a heavy metallic ball that can stick to magnetic walls. Blob can turn into a black hole thanks to the Graviton Bomb, which attracts Inkies to you and makes them meet an untimely death. Finally, there is the Re-Gen that keeps your paint topped up.

de Blob 2 introduces a new 2D element that replaces the old 'shake to transform' landmarks of the first. Blue Tongue promises that while at first these 2D areas may be easy they soon become complex and with around 100 of them they add a whole new aspect to the game.

Mr. Hagger mentioned several particular areas you will be playing in. Paradise Island is where the game starts after Comrade Black has turned the once happy island into a miserable colourless world. In the game the Inkt Corporation has produced Blanc Cola, a tasteless and bland drink. This story point ultimately leads Blob to a natural springs area that Blue Tongue promises to be a real highlight of the title. As well as this there is an ice level whereby Blob can skate around on the frozen ink and melt it as it is transformed.

On of the biggest changes to the de Blob 2 from the original is the inclusion of Pinky the Robot, an assistant for the player that helps you when you are stuck. While she cannot paint buildings she can destroy enemies and help you find the right colour.

When asked if there would be any online leader boards or downloadable content Mr. Hagger said there wouldn't be as anything they wanted to include in this game they have ensured is already there.
