News: DK Bongos Axed, Plttchen Gets New Mode

Bplus have confirmed to us that the DK Bongo mode will not be available in upcoming WiiWare title Plttchen - twist 'n' paint, though it will be replaced by a new mode.

Bplus made some massive waves when they announced the very first WiiWare title last year, Plttchen - twist 'n' paint. Sporting a clean, great-looking style and an original concept (it's a puzzle-shooter), the game was set to support Nintendo's immensely fun DK Bongo peripherals, which were released with the Donkey Konga series of games on the GameCube. Sadly, this feature did not make it into the final game. Speaking exclusively to N-Europe, Bplus revealed what the DK Bongo multiplayer mode would have been like, and why it had to be removed.

Cutting out the DK Bongo mode was a last-minute decision by Nintendo and Bplus, as keeping the functionality would alienate those Wii users who don't own Bongos (as the Big N no longer support the peripherals). "On the one hand we are very sad that we had to remove the DK Bongo-Feature at the very last moment in development," says Bernd Geiblinger, the art director at Bplus. "However, we understand that Nintendo wants to focus on Wii hardware. On the other hand we are glad to present the Bomb Rain Party Mode which is one of the most hectic game modes ever seen in any videogame."

Bernd described the omitted multiplayer mode to us, entitled Plttchen Tank Mode. Featuring eight players working together using either a Wii Remote or Nunchuk to control their Fantasy MEs (player-controlled avatars), four additional players commandeering the DK Bongos would take control of the menacing Plttchen Tanks. Drumming the Bongo drum pads within the music's beat would turn the Tanks either clockwise or anti-clockwise, depending on which pad was whacked. The player would then clap to shoot drills at the FantasyMEs. This bitter war would be limited for the seemingly invincible Tanks however, who would be paralysed and vulnerable if the Bongos were bashed on the beat.

This is the new Bomb Rain Party Mode, described by Bplus as "one of the most hectic modes ever seen in any videogame".

We were also told about the brand new Bomb Rain Party Mode, which will be replacing Tank Mode. 4-8 players, using Wii Remotes and Nunchuks only, will play a seemingly normal game of Plttchen... until explosives bombard the black and white Plttchen tiles from the left and right sides of the screen. The player-controlled FantasyMEs will have to avoid these bombs, which are highly dangerous and will destroy them too. Up to 30 bombs will be on-screen at the same, depending on the amount of black and white tiles remaining. Bernd described the new mode as "pure chaos, pure fun".

With development complete and the title given a 7+ PEGI rating, it seems that Plttchen is ready to roll onto the WiiWare service. Stay tuned to N-Europe for an in-depth interview with Bplus regarding Plttchen - twist 'n' paint.
