News: Does The Wii Have Long Term Potential?

That is the question that is bothering Microsoft Exec Chris Satchell. Head inside to check it out.

In a recent interview with gamesindustry.biz, General Manager of Microsoft's Game Development Group, Chris Satchell, has pondered over whether or not Nintendo have what it takes to keep gamers interested in their system years down the line.

Satchell said, "I think the Wii is of interest, I'm not sure what its long term potential is. It's a super-strong for Nintendo's first-party IP, but beyond that

Satchell was quick to acknowledge the fact that the Wii is getting more and more developer support, however, he said: I just don't know if it's going to be that compelling."

Sales figures for the Nintendo Wii have gone through the roof, with sales of over 100,000 units during its launch weekend. But according to Satchell, it's still to early to tell whether the Wii will be the winner in the end. "It's going to start very fast, it's a cool thing that's different, but I'm not sure how big it's going to be in the long term."

Satchell even took time during the interview to look at Microsoft's other competitor in the videogame market, Sony. He criticised Sony's approach to online services and user created content, stating that: "I don't think Sony has the right focus. I'm not even sure, looking at how they execute, that they even think that it's important. "Like providing people with tools so that they can be creative; they certainly don't seem to do it in their professional space, so I don't really believe they're going to do it in other spaces."

He certainly has a lot to say! However, is there any truth to his words?
