News: Downhill Jam To Be No Easy Ride

New details have emerged on this much awaited title.

In a recent interview with PlanetGamecube, Alex Ness, the producer of Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for Wii, commented on a few details regarding this title, which will see a release hopefully sometime before the year is out.

While the game takes a different approach to the traditional Tony Hawk games, it promises to offer something new and that is partly down to the controller. Ness commented: "Activision did research about what kinds of things people would want to see in a Tony Hawk game and racing received a very strong response. The Wii just seemed like the perfect console for a racing game like this. Specifically because of the Wii remote. People seem to instinctually tilt and "steer" the controller when they play racing games and we thought it would be great to use the motion-sensor capabilities of the Wii remote in that fashion."

There have been comparisons between this forthcoming title and games such as "SSX", and another comparison is the fact that you will be able to knock other skaters off their boards. Ness revealed to what extent knocking people over will have on the gameplay: "You can punch and kick pedestrians walking around, as well as other skaters to knock them off their boards. Doing this is a big part of gameplay. Besides being fun and generally advantageous in a race, knocking people over and breaking things give you speed boosts. As far as tricks go, they don't affect the other racers directly but tricking also gives you speed boosts, which can often be essential to winning the race."

Regarding the amount of "levels", it turns out that there will be 8 very large environments, which will be subsequently broken up into 96 seperate events. There will also be shortcuts, too, just to add in that extra dimension to the gameplay.

One thing that disappointed us was the news that this title will not have online play: "Offline, people can play 2 and 4-player modes, competing in every kind of event we have for the single player. We're not planning any WiFi or online modes at this time."

Will online play be added further along down the line? Who knows. But, as of yet, this title will not feature online play. More news on this as we get it.
