The DSi's own Virtual Console service is on the way, with GameBoy and GBA titles available to download in the future...

This has been on many people's minds since the first news of downloadable games/apps being available on the DSi. Now, Kombo is reporting that last night, at a special event for gold and platinum Club Nintendo members to try out the DSi, what we all hoped for was confirmed.

To start with, there will be only first-party Nintendo titles, which like other DSiWare will be region-locked. But the titles are savable to an SD card, with SD Card support greater than 2GB promised.

Update: Nintendo called Kombo today to clarify the issue, since no official statement on this has yet been made. It appears the Nintendo rep which broke this news jumped the gun a little bit:

"Nintendo called Kombo up today and requested that it be known that some of the above information is not officially announced for North America and as a result, may not be completely accurate.

"Specifically, they told us that you will not be able to play GB and GBA games directly from your SD memory card. Also, downloadable GB and GBA games have not officially been announced for North America (only Japan, so far)."
