News: DS: Japan & America's Most Wanted

Nintendo have certainly exceeded the 10 percent they hoped may be interested by the Nintendo DS, so much so in fact that they may not be able to cope.

The demand for the Nintendo DS has been so great that Nintendo may not be able to ship many units to retailers when it launches in America and Japan. However this great demand does not come with bad effects, with analysts suggesting people may chose the PSP in Japan instead.

According to Sunday's Nikkei Journal the DS pre-orders have now reached over 2 million in Japan, twice what Nintendo anticipated. To cope with the sheer demand Nintendo have manufactured a third factory in China.

A lot of the pre-orders came from websites, which are now no longer taking pre-orders. Stocks ran out after only one day, certainly a delight and problem for Nintendo.

While adding new factories may not do a lot of good before the launch it is expected to help ship some more units early next year.

With this high level of interest Nintendo have changed their expected sales of the Nintendo DS for this fiscal year, ending March 31st 2005. The revised target is 4 million units.

"Pre-orders are going smoothly with stores filling up on their online orders," Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told the Nikkei Journal. Iwata would also be pleased to know that shares in Nintendo have risen 3.8 percent today to 12,550 yen.
