Official Nintendo press release outlines DS success, sales of Mario Kart DS over 1 million in the States...
On the heels of massive sales milestones in Japan for Nintendo's dual-screened prodigy, NOA today issued a press release expanding DS sales success to the US as well. With sales of approximately 4 million in the States, over 5 million in Japan and over 1 million in Europe (as of Summer 2005, before the Nintendogs phenomena), worldwide sales currently rest well above 10 million units sold.
Appealing software has certainly been the DS' calling card in all territories. Besides the global success of Nintendogs, recent release Mario Kart DS has been gobbled up by eager US gamers to the tune of over 1 million copies sold in just seven weeks. Meanwhile in Japan, where the DS has been breaking sales records regularly, the press release points out a new one: the system has now played host to an unprecedented number of million sellers in under 13 months, with the four first-party titles being the two Brain Training titles, the combined might of the Dogs and recent release Animal Crossing Wild World (the last after little more than a month in Japan). In addition, Mario Kart DS, Wario Ware and yes, Tamagotchi Corner Shop will likely cross the million-seller threshold as well.
Finally, Nintendo had impressive numbers to trumpet regarding the brand new WiFi Connection service. In the service's first seven weeks, over 550k unique users have already been recorded representing over 10 million connections (though how many of those are due to Mario Kart disconnects, we may never know...hey, I made a funny.)
The press release, in its beautifully official entirety can be found here.
