Not long ago the mystery port on the DS was revealed to be a connection for a headset with mic combination. Not exactly something to make the average joe jump up and down with glee. But one newly announced use of the headset could prove very inviting.

A report issued by TNI Securities yesterday mentions that it will be possible to use the DS' built in 802.11b wirless networking capabilities (along with the headset) at wireless hotspots to make free voice-over-ip calls. This particular application could have substantial appeal while further distancing the DS from the Game Boy line.

The DS is still on course for a Fall 2004 release in the US and Japan, with a first quarter 2005 release to follow in Europe.
