News: DSi Prototype Had Two DS Slots!

Big boss man Satoru Iwata reveals that the DSi originally had two DS cartridge slots. Why? Apparently, you asked for it.

On the latest Iwata Asks, Nintendo's big boss talks with the brains responsible for designing the upcoming DSi console, revealing a somewhat interesting tidbit: the device originally featured two DS cartridge slots as opposed to the DS and SD slots present in the final model. However, adding an extra DS slot made the console much bigger, so they had to scratch the idea.

According to Iwata-san, "there were a lot of requests among gamers, of course, and from in house as well, for two slots." Sure, blame the fans.

Eventually, Nintendo's R&D team settled on an SD card slot after gaming idol Shigeru Miyamoto "forcefully pushed" for it. "Early during planning, software developers in favor of SD cards weren't in the majority. If you use SD cards, the size increases, and at that stage it was difficult to visualize clearly what SD cards would bring to the system and what it would lack without them. But Miyamoto-san wanted to use them. When asked if he was certain, he said yes and promised that he would make the use of it. (laughs)"

What could Miyamoto-san have in store for DSi gamers? And what in the name of Nolan Bushnell could Nintendo have possibly done with two DS slots?
