News: DVD Wii Confirmed, Low Price Denied

Nintendo confirm that a DVD-enabled Wii is on its way to Japan, but deny rumours that the Wii price was meant to be lower...

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, a Nintendo representative confirmed that a new version of the Wii facilitating DVD playback will be launched in Japan, although the company has no plans at the moment to release it anywhere else in the world.

This news was earlier reported in the current issue of Edge magazine, which also claimed that Nintendo originally intended the Wii to launch at 150 or $200, before being forced to raise the price to 180/$250 due to pressure from retailers regarding profits. The spokesperson denied this however, stating that: "Price is set by retailers, not by manufacturers, so there is no truth in this assumption."
