News: EA Focusing on Hits

Electronic Arts has stated they are focusing on "hits" and plan to release less games in the next fiscal year.

In their end-of-year fiscal report Electronic Arts has reflected upon the last year and stated that in the next fiscal year they plan to release fewer games, focusing more on creating "hits". They are planning to release "approximately" 22 "primary" titles according to Shacknews, down from 36 in the last fiscal year and 54 in the fiscal year before that.

EA ended the fiscal year with a loss of $267 million, up from their previous year's earnings. However, there is still room for improvement so they have devised a new plan. The company discussed how the industry moves so quickly that relatively few titles become 'hits' but they are aiming to try and produce more hits by making less titles.

"Publishing fewer titles means that we concentrate more of our development spending on each title, and driving 'hit' titles often requires large marketing budgets and media spend."

They also acknowledge that an under-performing title can have an adverse affect on their profits and their competitors may end up taking a larger share of the market because of this.

According to report their biggest selling titles in Europe during the last fiscal year were FIFA 2011, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Medal of Honour.
