A comment from EA Games' boss has led to speculation that the Wii's successor may be closer than Nintendo is letting on.
While Nintendo has continuously refused to comment on the Wii's successor, typically only saying it will be released when it needs to be and when they have something new to show, many others are speculating about its release. EA Games' boss Frank Gibeau has hinted that it may be soon in a recent interview with Industry Gamers.
Mr. Gibeau describes the Wii as a "legacy console" and categorises it with the PS2. "They understand the dynamics and the fact that HD consoles is a booming part of business right now. Legacy platforms like PS2 and the Wii have dropped off significantly. They're not stupid. They're going to figure something out. They're going to come back at it."
He also noted how Nintendo were always promoting the Wii as "the biggest entertainment platform ever" and celebrating its success within the mass market. "Now, they're coming back with a second act. I think they know that. They're very self-aware as an organization and a very powerful brand," he adds.
Frank Gibeau also suggests that Nintendo must consider third-party developers when creating a new console. "[Wii] is a tough market for a third party. When I look at a development dollar in terms of which teams do I invest in, and what platforms to go at, they're not very competitive when you look at HD consoles, or free-to-play bets, or things like tablets and handsets. It's something they need to think seriously about with their next gen."
We will have to wait until Nintendo are ready to tell us about the Wii's successor, whether that is this year, next year or even the year after. Stay tuned to N-Europe for all the latest developments.
