News: EA May Ease Tiger Woods Out

EA are sticking by Tiger Woods for now but admit it may not make sense to do so in the future.

While Tiger Woods' personal life was affected by a number of accusations of infidelity last year EA, who develop the popular golfing simulator series Tiger Woods PGA Tour, did not drop him from their sponsorship deal unlike many other companies. However, they may soon stop using the golfer's name but purely for business reasons.

In a report by Reuters EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello stated that while EA are sticking with him now they may not due in the future if he continues to under perform as he has been doing lately.

"We have no plans to move away from him, but it's a business relationship on the basis of we make the best golf game and he's the best golfer. Both of those things need to be true in the long run for the partnership to make sense."

Recently EA shifted the focus of the series to the Ryder Cup and included Rory McIIroy on the cover, suggesting perhaps they are seeking to change their titular golfer to someone else. Sales for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2011 were down 68 percent compared to the previous year's sales, so while EA may be willing to give him "the benefit of the doubt", according to John Riccitiello, it seems the general public are not.
