The studio behind Gears of War is "very interested" in working on the Wii U.
One of Nintendo's aims with the Wii U was to win back some third party developers that had drifted away since the release of the Wii. Studios felt that the technically in-superior console, the abundance of 'casual' games and the focus on motion controlled input meant that their games weren't the right match. However, this seems to have changed a lot following the announcement of the Wii U as it is now much more powerful and contains a somewhat traditional controller, as well as offering a host of new possibilities.
Industry Gamers spoke to Epic Games' president Mike Capps recently and he confirmed that the studio is "very interested" in working on Nintendo's new console. Epic Games is best known for Gears of War, a title that has proven popular on the Xbox 360. Mr. Capps claimed that while the studio is very much interested in developing for the console but they do not yet have any games in the works. However, there is some good news as Epic Games are already familiar with an important aspect of the Wii U:
"At the launch event at E3, some of the products that you saw running on Wii U were based on Unreal Engine technology. So that kind of gives you an idea of where we are in that space. You can certainly use our engine on that platform it's a natural fit from a technology perspective. It opens up some doors that weren't open before on current generation consoles because it is going to be a powerful box. I'm sure [Epic VP] Mark Rein would love anyone who's interested to know how official our support is to get in touch with him!"
Whatever Epic Games end up developing for the Wii U we're sure it will be great. Their work on Gears of War has shown that they are certainly capable of producing titles that are, dare we say, epic.
