Aaron Greenberg, Chief of Staff for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, has stated that he is sure Kinect will sell more than the Wii did when it launched.
While the Wii has been out since 2006 it is only this year that it is facing direct competition, in terms of motion-based gaming, from both Sony's Move and Microsoft's Kinect. While Sony's effort has already launched Microsoft's is not out just yet.
Speaking to Eurogamer Mr. Greenberg commented that they do not see Move as a direct competition due to different approaches.
However, he was much more competitively minded when it came to Nintendo's Wii console. "We'll definitely sell more sensors than the Wii sold when it launched or the Xbox 360 sold when it launched," he announced boldly.
When the Wii was launched at the end of 2006 it was practically sold out everywhere at Christmas in Europe and in the six months between November 2006 and February 2007 it sold 1.86 million units in America. With the launch impending we'll see if Kinect lives up to Mr. Greenberg's comments.
