News: id Software Open To Wii Dev After All

John Carmack is more open minded when it comes to Wii development than before...

id Software's John Carmack, the legend behind Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake among others said some time ago their development technology wasn't geared towards Wii, so making games for it was pretty much a no-go, even though he appreciated and enjoyed what Nintendo was doing with Wii and DS.

Now, in an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Carmack says that they were pitched to do a Wii game related to an iPhone title in development, but that things are still pretty much in the air. The hypothetical game would be something made ground up for Wii that would use a pre-existing IP where they "have a little bit of leverage".

(...)"the idea is that we would be setting up the game in such a way that we would deal with some of the "Rage" (an upcoming game for 360, PS3 and PC-- ed) content pipeline for the Wii," says Carmack. "While we can't do a freeform game like that, we could do a limited-scope game in a particular way so there would be a core bit of technology to develop there that would let it do something really visually stunning in a more limited game framework."

Obviously this doesn't confirm that id Software will at any point make a Wii game, but chances certainly are better now.
