News: IGN Editors Confirm VC Title Development

IGN's Nintendo editors are moving forward with plans to develop a downloadable title for Nintendo's looming Virtual Console service...

It looks like IGN Wii editors Matt Casamassina and Mark Bozon are very serious about putting out their own unique offering for Nintendo's Virtual Console download service. In their latest "Wii-k in Review" podcast, the pair dropped the first vague details on their game project. While promising a "completely, horribly, insane and wacky" experience, M & M nevertheless assured listeners that they will be working with a "fairly top-tier, triple-A development team". The game's progress is set to become a weekly feature on the site in the near future, a sort of developer diary for a team targeting original game development on the Virtual Console.

The rest of the details don't yet amount to much, but are interesting tidbits nontheless:

  • Mark hinted that they will offer the completed game for a low price, perhaps even in the neighborhood of 500 Wii Points (equivalent to $5)
  • It will not be a puzzle game, but will have the easy lure of a quality puzzle game
  • The game is meant to invoke the simple gameplay appeal of classic NES experiences
  • Matt promised the game will utilize four wii remotes...though how many simultaneous players this setup entails remains to be revealed

Currently untitled (not to mention sporting an unspecified genre and an unannounced developer) it would be prudent to keep excitement to a dull roar. Nevertheless, the potential execution of this concept would be an exciting milestone for indie development - a segment that the Big N professes to want to nurture with the Wii development environment and VC business model.

More details to come...next year?
