News: Iwata and Miyamoto Chat About the 3DS

Iwata Asks someone you may have heard of - Shigeru Miyamoto.

Over the last few weeks Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata has spoken to numerous developers about their games for the 3DS. In the newest edition of the 'Iwata Asks' series he speaks to Nintendo's real life mascot Shigeru Miyamoto about the numerous games he has had a hand in as well as the console itself.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata reminisce about Mr. Iwata's predecessor Hiroshi Yamauchi's famous words "the hardware is just a box you buy only because you want to play Mario games." With several games built into the 3DS it seems that this philosophy has long since disappeared and Mr. Miyamoto discusses how they came to be.

Mr. Miyamoto's initial reaction to the augmented reality function the Entertainment Analysis & Development Department showed him was "we can't use that kind of stuff as a new game," although he obviously changed his mind eventually as numerous examples of it can be found on the 3DS, such as the pre-packaged cards and Face Raiders.

The 3DS also features Mii Maker and StreetPass Mii Plaza modes, following on from the Wii's Mii avatars. However, Mr. Miyamoto has wanted to include something similar since the days of the SNES but it was only when the Wii was released in 2006 that he got his wish. Shigeru Miyamoto has a clear goal when it comes to Miis: "I want to spread Mii characters all around the world". He intends to do this by improving the Mii's appearance and the ability to transfer them.

Shigeru Miyamoto also discusses the charm of the 3DS and his excitement for its future in the interview. The pair discuss how important StreetPass is to the 3DS and their belief that it will be one of the biggest aspects of the console as it allows the easy exchange of information and data amongst owners.

The rest of the first part of the interview can be read over at Nintendo. The interview is to be continued so keep an eye on the site for updates.
