News: Iwata Asks More About the 3DS

Nintendo has added more to the 3DS focused Iwata Asks discussion.

The newest instalment of the Iwata Asks series is a continuation of his discussion about the 3DS after the first part posted last week. The conversation discusses Nintendo's determination to ensure you did not need glasses to view the 3D effects, the importance of the slider that controls the 3D and how happy 3D photos makes people.

Iwata comments that the inclusion of two cameras to help take 3D photos raised the price of the handheld by more than if just one camera had been included.

"That's because, in order to take a proper 3D photo, the optical axes for both have to be perfectly aligned and facing the same way. The precision necessary when compared to having just one camera is completely different...If the angles and axes of the two cameras aren't in line with each other, they aren't of any use as cameras for taking 3D photos. People in charge of manufacturing must have thought that this would be the biggest challenge for them for the mass production."

Miyamoto is apparently eager to push the 3DS so that it can handle 3D video in the future according to Iwata. We'll have to wait to see whether this will ever happen but Iwata does confirm that the 3DS can hold SD memory cards of up to 32GB.

The discussion then moved onto Nintendogs + Cats and the improvement to textures that the 3DS offered. Hideki Konno, who was in charge of the title, noted that in the original Nintendogs the eyes were just a texture but with the 3DS they've actually included eyeballs so there is a big difference in terms of graphics in that regard. Speaking of eyeballs the cats' eyes will dilate depending on the time of day, just as cats eyes do in real life.

Nintendogs + Cats will also take advantage of the StreetPass feature as you can set it so your Mii character walks your favourite dog while you are walking around with your 3DS. When you pass someone else with a 3DS your Miis will interact and exchange gifts. Iwata noted that the implementation of StreetPass was designed to allow players to interact universally as quite often when a new game comes out you may be able to find gamers who have it for a few weeks. However, after this it may become difficult as people move onto other games but with StreetPass they will interact anyway, regardless of what game is being played.

The conversation discusses a few other aspects and is set to continue in the near future but for now you can read the whole thing over on the official Nintendo website.
