Wii Play Motion

News: Iwata Asks - Wii Play: Motion Edition

Satoru Iwata talks to the teams behind Wii Play: Motion.

While some people may dismiss Wii Play: Motion as a freebie you get when you purchase a MotionPlus controller Nintendo has put a lot of effort into the recently released title. A number of teams worked on the game, all contributing a few games each, and Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata has spoken to them about the game.

At the start of development the teams came up with ideas for a number of games then produced prototypes for a few of those. Nintendo then selected which would be continued and in the end 12 mini-games were included. The discussion goes into detail about the history of a number of the mini-games and what problems developers faced in realising their ideas.

Wii Play: Motion was designed to not oly get the MotionPlus controller into as many people's hands as possible but also to teach them how to use it. The studios all discuss how they factored this into the development process and how they tried to make the mini-games fun while utilising the possibilities the new controller offers.

"With the Wii Remote Plus, you can have fun that wasn't possible before. I think Star Shuttle is a good example of a new kind of gameplay that wasn't possible with the original Wii Remote. Overall, there are all kinds of gamesgames you play sitting down, games like Veggie Guardin' that require using your whole body, and games you play off the screen."

The full discussion reveals a lot about the history of this title and also gives an insight into the relationships between Nintendo and these numerous studios who worked on Wii Play: Motion. If you're a fan of the title or curious about it the discussion is well worth reading.
