News: Iwata Discusses Nintendo's Wii U Plans

Satoru Iwata comments on Wii U's ability to stream content without any latency, why it's not a 3DS and Mr. Miyamoto's ideas.

Following last week's E3 many journalists spoke to Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata about the console and while the specialist press primarily focused on software, franchises and online, as these areas are of great interest to fans, it is interesting to see what non-specialist press wish to know.

Mr. Iwata spoke to Techland, a technology-focused offshoot of TIME, about the newly unveiled console. In the interview he spoke about the potential range of the Wii U's controller and while it doesn't seem finalised yet he does seem hopeful that you will be able to play it in another room, however he notes it does depend on the thickness of the walls and other potential problems.

Mr. Iwata also states that when Nintendo decided to have a second screen that the console streams to they made sure they overcame the issue of latency, otherwise known as lag. He notes that they have managed to do so with the Wii U, allowing for games to be instantly streamed to the controller.

The boundaries of home video games consoles are to be eradicated by the Wii U according to Satoru Iwata. Apparently Shigeru Miyamoto was the first to notice that the addition of the second screen opens up a huge range of entertainment possibilities that they hope to implement with the Wii U. The ability to see a virtual world around you, not just on the TV screen, is something unique to this console and Mr. Iwata is hopeful that it will offer "some new structure of entertainment".

While the Nintendo Wii U offers a touch screen in much the same way as the 3DS does it does not offer glasses-less 3D gameplay. Nintendo confirmed a few months ago that it wouldn't offer 3D on its next console, as 3D TV adoption rate is too low at present, and Mr. Iwata also adds that the two units are designed to offer different experiences.

"We have a separate mission with Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Of course, there are some TV sets with the capability to show the 3D available today but it's not dominating yet. Of course, you may want to say now that you have the second screen and you have the 3D technology with Nintendo 3DS, however after all, that kind of experience we can explore over the existing Nintendo 3DS machine. As I said, we are trying to make a new structure of home entertainment and because we are trying to make something unprecedented, we just wanted to focus on something different."
