Satoru Iwata explains the rather unique way in which several developers came together to create Wii Play Motion...
We bring you more delicious morsels from Iwata's briefing to investors yesterday, this time concerning Wii Play Motion. The MotionPlus-powered sequel to the smash-hit Wii Play was announced earlier this month, but the news arguably failed to really capture the imagination of gamers. However, Iwata's explanation of the game's development might just make the project seem a lot more promising.
According to the Nintendo president, each of the 12 mini-games featured was created by a separate development company after an in-house team drew up an initial prototype build. This allowed for a "unique", competitive development environment as each studio aimed to best the others. Nintendo also had some sort of hand in the creation of each game.
Iwata offered no hints of which teams were on-hand in the development of Wii Play Motion, and it's possible we never will know. However, Iwata did state the the development process for each mini-game will be talked about in the near future.
Wii Play remains one of the best-selling video games of all time, but was met coolly by most critics and gamers. It's unlikely Wii Play Motion will shift similar numbers, but it looks like it may be a much more high-quality package.
