News: Iwata Talks Wii U Launch Software

Nintendo is carefully considering the Wii U launch line-up.
While the 3DS was initially met with a great deal of excitement following its announcement last year its sales have been lower than anticipated. At last week's investors meeting Satoru Iwata was asked if Nintendo were worried the same thing could happen with the recently announced Wii U.
Satoru Iwata stated that Nintendo are aware that had they launched the 3DS with more software then sales may have been different and it is something they are reflecting upon. However, he also comments that entertainment products often change during development and while they can meet deadlines quite often when a game is nearly complete they realise that changes need to be made, ultimately resulting in a delay.
Only after developing the product to some degree and actually touching it, we can notice that "This would be more enjoyable if we made it in this way," or "The fun element of this part is somewhat interrupted by other things." A part of this is known as Mr. Miyamoto's "upending the tea table," but we sometimes request changes in the specifications at the very end of the development stage. This does not mean that we do not care about the schedule, but the most important thing for us is that majority of the people who have bought and experienced Nintendo products feel, "This is actually fun." If this does not happen, our brand will quickly fall apart, so we are doing this in order to maintain our brand. But because we are doing this, we cannot constantly provide the market with big hit titles.
Mr. Iwata concludes his answer to the question by saying that Nintendo are factoring this into the planning for the Wii U launch, due at some point next year. It seems that Nintendo are determined to ensure the Wii U is a success right off the bat, with a mix of first-party and third-party support.
