News: Iwata Touches On Wii Market, DS Successor

Satoru Iwata divulges Nintendo's plans for a DS successor and the state of Wii in 2010...

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently gave an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, where he discussed Nintendo's plans for 2010.

On the subject of the DS, Iwata addressed the possibility of a true successor to the handheld. He stated that Nintendo will get round to such a machine when it is viable to include high-resolution image output and a sensor that captures player movements.

However, Iwata added that the current DS saw its highest sales yet in North America in 2009, so we wouldn't expect a successor any time soon. Indeed, the company specifically expressed a desire to focus on pushing the current model, announcing plans to expand the DS at Mac initiative, where DS owners can connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi service for special content and demos in branches of McDonald's.

On the Wii side of things, Iwata seemed happy to state that the market "has started to accelerate again", coming as a contrast to comments made late last year on the state of the console.

Discussing what he hopes will drive the console in 2010, Iwata specifically mentioned plans to announce the first pieces of software to utilise the Wii Vitality Sensor in July. This is of slight interest, as it was previously assumed Nintendo would divulge these titles at E3 in June.

The final snippet was the already-reported plans to release the next main Wii Zelda title before the year's end. However, as always is the case with Zelda titles, we'll believe it when we see it on shelves.
