News: Japanese Wireless LAN Fee

If a new bill passes through Japanese parliament next year, gamers in the land of the rising sun will have to pay for using the wireless LAN functions on their portable gaming devices, namely NDS and the PSP.

A bill which is set to be passed through Japanese parliament next year is proposing that people using wireless-LAN-enabled equipment should incur a charge whenever they do so. The bad news for Japanese gamers is that this will apply to the Nintendo DS, as well as the PlayStation Portable, although the bill mainly concentrates on offices and homes which use wireless LAN to enable several computers to access the internet.

Currently, only big mobile networks and the like are charged for having huge wireless networks, but this new bill aims to "make things fair". However, the bill will most likely not go without opposition- as this isn't good news for consumers or electronic companies.
