No need to wait for that mysterious lightsabre game from LucasArts, as lightsaber-swinging controls will be included in the Wii version of Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga!
Surely one of the first things every soon-to-be Wii owner thought of when the fantastic Wii Remote was first unveiled was swinging the controller around like Luke Skywalker in a Star Wars game. Surprisingly, LucasArts waited over a year to announce that their mysterious project was in development, and we were effectively left in the dark again due to a lack of details, screens and a release date. Is Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga what they had in mind?
The new Wii control scheme has been announced, and it's looking quite promising. In addition to the classic button-mashing controls accessed via the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Complete Saga will also utilise the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote and incorporate them into force powers and lightsaber swinging. The Nunchuk's Z Button allows you to use the Force to build up Lego blocks. But who wants to do that when you can pump your arms up and down like a mad man being attacked by a swarm of bees to create things using the Force powers a lot faster than you would by pressing a simple button. Also, it's been said that blaster characters can possibly fire their grappling hooks by flicking the Wii Remote up.
The lightsaber controls appear to work like in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, with preset animations in-game rather than responding to every muscle twitch. Whilst that's a shame (and it also means that we'll still be waiting for that mysterious lightsabre game), at least they haven't left attack execution to just a button press (the B trigger if you can't be bothered waggling the Remote). Perform a jump or double jump and then a lightsabre swing and you will execute a 'super slam attack'. Shots from enemy blasters can also be deflected by swinging the Wii Remote. Motion-triggered attacks are more effective and cause more damage than button presses, so maybe you should opt for the waggle if you decide to pick up this game.
