Nintendo's annual report shows just how many Wii and DS units have been sold, as well as sales figures for key software titles too.

Nintendo's annual report for the financial year ending March 2011 has been translated and released for the public to explore. While the company has hit headlines recently for fledging 3DS sales and shares dropping but looking at the figures for last year they're not in dire straights quite yet. The report contains details about how well the Nintendo DS and Wii have done as well as a number of software titles for both consoles.

The DS family of consoles, being the Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL, has sold a staggering 146.42 million units worldwide as of March 31, 2011. Considering the original Nintendo DS was launched in November 2004 that is approximately 25 million units sold each year. 839.48 million software units have been sold in that time, equal to 5.7 software units being purchased alongside each hardware unit.

The top selling DS software titles are all primarily Mario or Pokémon, with Brain Training, Nintendogs and Animal Crossing being the only titles mentioned that were not part of these franchises. The biggest selling DS title has been New Super Mario Bros., selling 26.88 million units. Nintendogs came second having sold 23.46 million units across its numerous versions. All the Pokémon games combined (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black & White) sold 48.41 million units. The top selling titles for the DS are as follows:

1. New Super Mario Bros. - 26.88 million
2. Nintendogs - 23.46 million
3. Mario Kart DS - 21.04 million
4. Brain Age/Training - 18.96 million
5. Pokémon Diamond/Pearl - 17.57 million
6. Brain Age 2/ More Brain Training - 14.83 million
7. Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver - 11.90 million
8. Pokémon Black/White - 11.51 million
9. Animal Crossing - 11.51 million
10. Super Mario 64 DS - 9.65 million
11. Mario Party DS - 8.21 million
12. Pokémon Platinum - 7.43 million

It is worth noting just how impressive the sales figures for Pokémon Black/White is considering these numbers are only up until the end of March 2011 and they had only just been released outside of Japan during that month. The total of all the software listed above account for 183.23 million units of the 839.48 million total software units sold, equivalent to just under 22%.

The Nintendo Wii sold 86.01 million units up until March 21, 2011. This means that the Nintendo Wii has sold roughly 20 million units per year worldwide since its launch in late 2006. Life-to-date software sales for the Nintendo Wii is an impressive 716.09, meaning approximately 8 software titles have been purchased alongside each hardware unit. The biggest seller is, unsurprisingly, Wii Sports as bundled software is still counted (although it is worth noting its has not been bundled with the console in Japan since launch). The top selling Wii software titles are all Mario games or entries in the Wii series other than The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The top selling titles for the Wii are as follows:

1. Wii Sports - 76.76 million
2. Wii Play - 28.02 million
3. Wii Sports Resort - 27.68 million
4. Mario Kart Wii - 27.00 million
5. Wii Fit - 22.67 million
6. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 21.94 million
7. Wii Fit Plus - 18.49 million
8. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 10.27 million
9. Super Mario Galaxy - 9.31 million
10. Mario Party 8 - 8.22 million
11. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 6.36 million
12. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 5.82 million

The combined total of all these titles is 262.54 million units, meaning these 12 games sold just over 36% of all the software units sold thus far.
