Game developer Luc Bernard speaks to N-Europe about his sudden plans to quit the games industry.
Luc Bernard, developer of PC and Wiiware, has decided to quit the games industry and will no longer going to develop any new games. Luc recently oversaw the release of his title Eternity's Child on the PC distribution service Steam and title is due to follow on Wiiware later in the year. Unfortunately the release of the game has been somewhat marred by a review from a popular gaming blog that Luc described as "unprofessional". The aftermath of this article has seen Luc targeted personally through comments both on his personal blog and even messages sent to his private email address.
When we spoke to Luc he had the following to say;
"I am making sure to update Eternity's Child on PC all the time with new chapters, and I will finish off the Wiiware version with alten8, but otherwise I'm taking a break from the industry right now, and am not going to work on any future games. I made myself too public and that was my biggest mistake."
When asked why he was continuing to support the game despite its very public slating, Luc defiantly replied: "You think I would abandon the customers? No, never."
Luc also spoke of his desire to move into other media with the possibility of both a graphic novel and cartoon series in the works. He was keen to stress that whilst he is indeed quitting the industry it is by no means the end and that he may return if circumstances change. He largely cited financial difficulties as ultimately being the deciding factor. More of his musing can be found on his personal blog.
The Wii will still see the game released with alten8 handling this conversion as Luc takes a back seat. The PC game will be still be supported with a full time coder working finishing off the future free chapters already drawn and designed by Luc, who hopes the game can blossom into a large modding community using the level editor.
N-Europe wishes Luc well in his future endeavours and hope he finds success in his chosen path. In the meantime we can all look forward to the future Wiiware release of Eternity's Child and hope that Luc Bernard one day returns to the industry and brings back his beautiful hand-drawn art style with him!
