Thirty-two tracks - sixteen new, plus sixteen classic courses from earlier incarnations. Fancy playing Moo Moo Farm on your DS, anybody?
Thirteen years down the line from the first Mario Kart game and five incarnations later, Nintendo is celebrating the history of the series with the new DS incarnation of the game. Out of the 32 tracks on offer, 16 are classic courses picked from the cream of Mario Kart history.
Mario Kart DS' producer Hideki Konno said that the team had "identified 16 of the best courses that people really enjoyed playing in the past... I believe that the players who used to play these courses are going to have a very nostalgic feeling."
Collected together as the Retro Grand Prix, the 16 classic circuits are split into four Cups - Shell, Banana, Leaf and Lightning - each containing four tracks taken from each of the previous Mario Kart games, and fittingly, the first track you come across is also the first track from the first game - Mario Circuit 1 from the SNES' Super Mario Kart.
None of the layouts in the classic tracks have been fiddled with, only the graphics have been updated. Other confirmed retro tracks include Mario Kart 64's Moo Moo Farm (complete with those pesky moles and classic track music), Super Circuit's Bowser Castle and Double Dash's Mushroom Bridge.
With thirty-two tracks in total, Mario Kart DS has more courses than any Mario Kart game before it. November 25th can't come quick enough!
